The Philadelphia 76ers have officially signed Joel Embiid, a seven-time NBA All-Star, to a multi-year contract extension. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, as per team policy.
“Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game. We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come,” Managing Partner Josh Harris said. “Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely – if ever – seen. He is integral to this franchise’s quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home.”
“I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia,” Embiid said. “Through all the ups and downs, this city and the fans have been everything, and I am so grateful for how they’ve embraced me. I want to thank Josh, David, and the entire organization. Philadelphia is home and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”
Originally selected by the 76ers with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Embiid’s 2016-17 All-Rookie Team honor served as an appropriate beginning to a decorated career that includes a gold medal representing Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2022-23, five All-NBA Team honors, seven consecutive All-Star selections from 2017-24, three All-Defensive Team nods, and back-to-back seasons as the NBA’s scoring champion (2021-23).
In 433 games (all starts) with the franchise, Embiid has averaged 27.9 points on 50.4-percent shooting, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 blocked shots across 31.9 minutes per contest. He ranks first in franchise history in scoring average (27.9 points/game), fifth in blocked shots (720), tied for sixth in triple-doubles (seven), and seventh in total points scored (12,071). Embiid also ranks third on the franchise ledger with eight 50-point games, including his record-setting 70-point contest against San Antonio on Jan. 22, 2024.
The Cameroon native produced 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 2023-24, joining Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain as the only two players in NBA history to average at least 34.0 points, 11.0 boards, and 5.0 assists over any 39-game span. His 1,353 points in 1,309 minutes played across those 39 contests also pair Embiid with Chamberlain (1961-62; 4,029 pts in 3,882 minutes) as the only two players in NBA history to reach this point tally while averaging at least one point per minute played.
Since his NBA debut on Oct. 26, 2016 – a night on which he tallied the first of his 349 career 20-point games – Philadelphia’s 375 wins rank fifth in the NBA. The 76ers have qualified for the postseason in each of the last seven seasons, marking the franchise’s longest such stretch since 1975-87.
Since his NBA debut, Embiid is the only center, and one of three players throughout the league, to rank in the top five in 30-point games (189), 40-point games (48), and 50-point games (eight).
