NewDelhi: With the IPL 2025 retention deadline fast approaching on October 31, all eyes are on the franchises with the most devoted fan bases like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The official broadcasters are set to reveal the retention lists in a special show starting at 4:30 PM IST, sparking speculation and excitement among fans. As reports circulate about potential retentions and releases, anticipation grows for the upcoming mega auction. It's expected that several big names may be up for grabs, making the upcoming IPL season even more exciting.

According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Chennai Super Kings have finalized their five retained players for IPL 2025: MS Dhoni, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana. This decision indicates that key players like Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and others are expected to be released.

The report further mentions that these five retentions will cost Chennai Super Kings at least Rs 65 crore from their overall purse of Rs 120 crore. Interestingly, MS Dhoni is expected to be retained as an uncapped player, offering CSK additional flexibility in their budget.

Although the BCCI and franchises have yet to confirm anything, the rumor mill is in full swing, with prominent players grabbing headlines. At a recent event, when former Indian captain MS Dhoni was asked about the ongoing speculation, he responded with a humorous remark, showing his trademark wit amidst the frenzy.

“Everyone is a team owner now,” Dhoni said at the event.

“Whatever player they desire, whichever player is going up for auction and whoever they decide to purchase, we should be prepared for it. IPL auction works in mysterious ways.,” he added.

Dhoni, who captained Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles, recently confirmed that he will be taking part in IPL 2025. The veteran wicket-keeper batter is expected to be retained by Chennai Super Kings for just Rs 4 crores thanks to a rule that was brought back by the BCCI for this auction.

According to the rule, an Indian cricket team player will be considered ‘uncapped’ if he has not played for the national side in the last five years.
